Long Island is East of New York City. And is located in the southeast part of the U.S. state of New York, this is classed as part of the New York metro area.

Long Island starts at New York Harbor. Which is approx 0.35 miles or 0.56 km the the east of Manhattan Island and runs eastward over 100 miles or 160 km into the Atlantic Ocean. There are four counties that make up the island; Kings and Queens counties (the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively) which are closest to New York City on the west end of the island. Nassau County shares the western third of the island. And Suffolk County makes up the largest part covering the eastern two thirds.

Long Island runs 118 miles or 190 km east from New York Harbor at the islands west more point to Montauk Point being the east most point. The maximum north-to-south distance is 23 miles or 37 km between Long Island Sound and the Atlantic coast. Long island has a land area of 1,401 square miles or 3,630 km2.
