Riverhead Suffolk

The town of Riverhead is located within Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the north shore of Long Island. Although most county offices are in Hauppauge, Riverhead has always been the county seat. The town rests on the mouth of the Peconic River, from which it derives its name. The town’s principal economic center is Riverhead, a smaller hamlet within it. It is 166 miles (267 km) southwest of Boston via the Orient Point-New London Ferry, and 76 miles (123 km) northeast of New York City.

The town of Riverhead is the agricultural apex of Long Island, with 20,000 acres of the island’s 35,000 acres of farmland within its borders. The town is also home to four separate beaches namely Iron Pier, Wading River, and Reeves Beach. It is bordered by Aquebogue to the east, Northville to the northeast, Riverside to the south, and Calverton to the west. Peconic Riverhead forms a natural boundary between the town and Riverside.

The roads of NY State Route 25 pass through the south. Old County Road serves as the main thoroughfare, where commercial zones are located. Roanoke Avenue runs north-south and connects NY State Route 25 on the south and Sound Avenue on the north. Running parallel about 2 kilometers away is Doctors Path.

Railroad Museum of Long Island which used to be the town’s railroad station is now a museum and is located on 416 Griffing Avenue. A nearby attraction is the Suffolk Theater. Continuing a little bit east from the theater is the Long Island Aquarium, right on Peconic River. Another attraction is the Safari Adventure on 1074 Pulaski Street. Merritts Pond is right across the Riverhead Cemetery. To the north of the cemetery is the Riverhead High School and Riverhead Middle School.

Riverhead is home to many parks and green spaces such as Stotzky Memorial Park, Polonaise Park, George Schmelzer Riverfront Park, Peconic Estuary, to the north is Sound Avenue Nature Preserve, and Indian Island County Park is the biggest. Cherry Creek Golf Links can be accessed via Sound Avenue.
