South Huntington is an affluent hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Residents have a Huntington Station postal address. The CDP has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2), all land.

Walt Whitman was born in South Huntington, where the Walt Whitman Shops mall can be found. In addition to St. Anthony’s School, Walt Whitman High School, and the South Huntington Public Library, it is also the home of the South Huntington Public Library. Previously, the Walt Whitman Shops were known as the Walt Whitman Shopping Center.

South Huntington borders the adjacent hamlets of Huntington Station, Elwood, Dix Hills, Melville, and West Hills. East Jericho Turnpike forms a natural border to the north and Northern State Parkway defines the southeast boundary. Walt Whitman Road crosses the community traversing north-to-south and serves as one of the major roads including the aforementioned roads. New York Avenue runs parallel with Walt Whitman Road, including Melville Road, and Pidgeon Hill Road to the east. The primary road serving the eastern part of the community is the Old Country Road running parallel with Northern State Parkway, it turns into Foxhurst Road as it heads northeast then Dix Hills Road going north

South Huntington Union Free School District is located on Weston Street in the western area near the West Hills/South Huntington border. Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is approximately 1.2 kilometers away from the school district. South Huntington Public Library is on Pidgeon Hills Road, adjacent to Long Island School for The Gifted and Brary Playground. Continuing south near the southern boundary is the location of St. Anthony’s High School, St Anthony’s Driver Education, and Terry Farrell Park.

Walt Whitman Shops serves as a major hub for bus routes in the area. Here are some routes that terminate there:

S29 to Babylon via Deer Park Avenue
S54 to Patchogue
H20 to Huntington
H30 to Huntington via Greenlawn
H40 to Northport
N79 to Hicksville

While traveling to Amityville or Halesite, the S1 bus also serves it along NYS Route 110.
