Echo Park Swimming Complex

Echo Park Swimming Complex in the hamlet of West Hempstead is the only town-owned indoor pool in the Town of Hempstead which with 475,000 residents is the most populous town on Long Island. The facility was built in 1993.

Echo Park Swimming Complex features an Olympic-sized pool, diving area, and toddlers’ pool totaling 21,500 square feet of water space which is enough to accommodate 575 bathers at one time. The facility has parking for 45 cars directly in front of the facility and two large parking lots behind it.

When temperatures rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit around Long Island, residents flock to the facility when local beaches are closed to swimmers due to bacteria levels as a result of runoff during heavy storms. In addition to locals using the facility every day during the summer months, hundreds of participants from local swim teams practice daily throughout the summer season at Echo Park Pool Complex. Many revelers from nearby Jones Beach State Park also use the facility every summer weekend.

The pool is monitored by a team of seven part-time lifeguards and one manager. The facility closes during the winter due to freezing temperatures and lack of usage but can be opened if activities outside warrant it. Water in the pool complex is filtered daily and chemicals are added as necessary to maintain proper sanitary conditions for bathers. The facility features two restrooms with showers that are kept clean by custodians from Hempstead Town’s Parks Department.

As Hempstead Town’s only indoor swimming facility,” Blakeman said, “Echo Park is a real asset to all our residents and, of course, because it is right in the backyard of our West Hempstead neighbors, they are able to really enjoy the benefits of the fitness complex. From the weight room to the sauna to the year-round aquatic, physical fitness and cultural arts programs, there really is something for everyone at Echo Park.”

Echo Park is located at 399 Nassau Boulevard, West Hempstead. The indoor pool and fitness complex are open to all Town of Hempstead residents. Business owners in the area say that people from surrounding neighborhoods flock to the pool when it opens for its annual fall season.

In addition, a number of patrons from nearby Roosevelt Field come to use the facility’s weight room which is often packed with fitness enthusiasts early in the morning before the start of a workday.

For those who wish to take advantage of swimming classes and programs at the facility with training sessions offered year-round by the Hempstead Town Aquatics Program. Participants can enroll in swimming classes for adults and children, water aerobics, first aid courses or special swimming sessions for veterans with disabilities.

In addition to providing a number of aquatic classes and programs, the Aquatics Division also offers drop-in open swim time and lap swim for adults and children.

Open Swim is available during both Fall and Spring. During this period there are no scheduled programs or classes available. However, we do offer free swimming times so that parents with young children may take advantage of the pools without having to enroll in any program while school is out for the summer break. There is no staff supervision on duty during this period. Supervision will be provided by certified lifeguards who have signed up to work Open Swim at their leisure.
